Breeders first met in November 1913 and appointed an interim commission presided over by Miguel Alfredo Martínez de Hoz. The purpose of this commission was to lay out the footings of an association orientated towards the defense of the thoroughbred breeders’ interests.
This association existed until the decade of 1960, when the activity collapsed because the Argentine Jockey Club’s activities were stopped. This situation caused the Breeders’ Association to take the necessary steps to obtain legal personality to formally assume responsibilities that the Jockey Club could not take.
Owing to different viewpoints regarding the ownership of the Studbook and the management of races, a group representative of Stud Farms’ owners, led by Ignacio Correas and Miguel E. Martínez de Hoz, founded a new association, which main objectives are described in Minutes No. 1 dated August 9, 1961:
“To promote, develop, modernize, direct, and by all means tend to the spreading of the thoroughbred, their improvement, prestige and quality, including the improvements made, the formation of new breeding stocks , the best breeding, and the essential defense of their interests, in all aspects tending to protect this source of national wealth, trying to make the species acquire the greatest national and international prestige.”
The above mentioned minutes also state“... the wish to provide the Buenos Aires Jockey Club with a set of ideas for recovering their powers in the management and administration of horse races."
The first executive committee was composed of Ignacio Correas (President), Miguel E. Martínez de Hoz (vice-president), Julio A. Menditeguy (Secretary) and Emilio J. Santamarina (Treasurer). The members of this committee met at temporary premises at the beginning.
The by-laws of the association were approved on August 29, 1962 by Decree 8802/62 of the Executive Power, granting the association legal personality to act under the name “Argentine Thoroughbred Breeders”.
As from April 1, 1970, the association had its offices at Cerrito 1353 and it had other temporary offices until December 6, 1972 when it moved to its current premises at Eduardo Costa 3055.![]() |
